Software
It is strongly recommended that you download and
install all of the workshop software before arriving in Lexington.
Ideally, you would do it early enough to get help from your university's
tech support. This is especially important if you are a Mac user (and be
aware that we do not have Mac expertise here, so you are on your own)
|
Software: UCINET/NetDraw
Used in: Network for Novices, Intro to SNA, Advanced SNA, Health
Applications |
|
Workshop participants should bring their own Windows-running laptops,
as UCINET and NetDraw are Windows programs. If you are
not already a registered user of UCINET, the software will expire after the
workshop. If you want to download this software ahead of time (always a
good idea in order to make sure it runs on your system, and that you
have sufficient rights to install it), just go to:
http://www.analytictech.com/ucinet6/setup.exe
The NetDraw software is automatically
installed when you install UCINET. |

|
Software: R
Used in: Stats for Networks, Stochastic Modeling |
|
The R
program provides an environment that will be used for both Siena
and ERGM analyses. Download and install from here:
http://cran.r-project.org |
| |
|
Software: SIENA
Used in: Stochastic Modeling |
|
If you are signed up for
the stochastic modeling session, you will also be using the R
version of the free SIENA software. You should
download the software in advance of the workshop. Download the R version
of the SIENA program here:
http://stat.gamma.rug.nl/siena_r.htm |
|
|
|
Software: ERGM
Used in: Stochastic Modeling (last day) |
|
The
last day of the stochastic modeling workshop
will also be using another free R package called ERGM.
It is part of a package called STATNET. However, for the
workshop, we will be using an older version of the ERGM module,
so instead of downloading StatNet from the web, go to our Google
Group and download the materials for the ERGM session. To
install, follow these instructions:
Step 1. Download and install the R package from
http://cran.r-project.org
Step 2. Download
ERGM.zip file
Step 3. Install the SNA and ERGM packages into R,
as follows:
-
Open R, Go to Packages, Select Install
packages from local zip files, Find where you saved the ERGM
zip file in step 2
-
Type: install.packages("sna");
install.packages("network")
If any problems, it should be pretty easy to sort
out the day of the workshop (don't panic!). Or email Jeff Smith
for help. |

|
Software: Microsoft Excel & Powerpoint
Used in: Networks for Novices, Intro to SNA, Advanced SNA |
|
These
are not strictly necessary, but will be used occasionally
demonstrate how to get data into programs like UCINET, and how
to get results out. |
